Cowgirl Softball Drops Huskers, 3-1
April 21, 2008 | Cowgirl Softball
Nebraska's only run was the first of the game as Heidi Foland crossed the plate. After singling up the middle, the Husker third baseman stole second. With two outs, leadoff hitter Darcy Rutherford hit a ball to centerfield, scoring Foland. However, Rutherford was thrown out at second attempting to stretch the hit into a double, ending the inning.
OSU plated all three runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore leftfielder Katelyn Bright led off the inning with a double and after a walk issued to freshman Alysia Hamilton, Kim Kaye hit a drive to right field that hit three feet below the top of the fence. The senior right fielder was credited with a double, and the hit scored Bright. A groundout and a walk by Junior Heather Kim brought in Molly Hill from the Nebraska bullpen. Boyd hit a 1-1 count into centerfield, scoring Hamilton and Kaye.
Whiddon, a sophomore from Huntington, Texas, pitched the entire game for her eighth complete game of the season. She earned six strikeouts while walking just one, improving her record to 9-5 on the year. Alex Hupp started for the Huskers and took the loss, dropping to 9-8 after giving up all three runs. Hill did scatter three hits and strike out five while walking none in 3-2/3 innings for NU.
Oklahoma State improved to 23-20 overall and 6-5 in Big 12 Conference action, moving into a tie for fourth place with Missouri. Nebraska fell to 17-22 overall and 1-9 in league action. The two teams will meet again at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Cowgirl Softball Complex. It will also be Senior Day as Oklahoma State recognizes seniors Kim Kaye and Meghan Wagner for their contributions to the Cowgirl Softball team.
Also, please note that the Bedlam softball game that was suspended in Stillwater on April 2 was moved to April 22 and will now start at 7 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
