Cowgirls Finish Fourth at Varsity Equestrian National Championships

Oklahoma State's equestrian team earned fourth place at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships on Saturday in Waco, Texas. Both the English and Western squads posting fourth-place finishes.
The OSU Western team took on Kansas State in Saturday's third-place contest. The Cowgirls entered the matchup having defeated the Wildcats two weeks ago in the first round of the Central Championships in Manhattan, Kansas.
On Saturday, the Wildcats claimed the horsemanship portion of the tournament by a 3-1 count. Sophomore Ashley Koch captured the only victory for the Cowgirls and her second of the tournament.
Kansas State picked up a 3-0 win in the reining category en route to a 6-1 overall victory.
In the individual Western championships, sophomore Leah Kuehn capped a successful season by placing second in the reining bracket.
By being selected to compete in the individual reining championship as the two seed, Kuehn was selected as the second best rider in her discipline.
“Overall I think the girls kept their head on straight, and rode smart,” Koch Said. “The energy was really high throughout the whole weekend. We fell short of our goal and have room to improve, but all of our girls rode hard.”
The Cowgirl were paired up with No. 3 seed Georgia in the third-place matchup in the English bracket on Saturday. The Bulldogs dealt the Cowgirls a 7-1 defeat with OSU's only victory coming in the equitation on the flat discipline by senior Bailey Mahoney.
Also on the English side, Mahoney and sophomore Ally Blais were selected to compete in the individual championship. Both girls lost close matches, but finished among the top four in the country in their discipline. Blais lost after tying her opponent by judges' pick in the equitation on the fences and Mahoney competed in the equitation on the flat discipline.
