Cowgirls Advance at Varsity Equestrian National Championships
April 19, 2008 | Cowgirl Equestrian
Oklahoma State¹s
equestrian team picked up a pair of impressive victories on Friday at the
Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, Texas.
The Cowgirl Western team faced a 3-1 deficit against South Carolina and
needed to win three out of four in the horsemanship discipline to advance in
the winner¹s bracket. OSU pulled off a 3-1 victory over the Gamecocks in the
discipline and won the match due to the total of its raw scores.
The Cowgirls won three head-to-head matches, which gave them the lead and
eventually the team victory. Senior Sam Davidson, junior Jordan Pickelman,
and sophomore Ashley Koch all captured victories on the day.
³I was shaking I was so nervous, but I knew what I had to do,² Davidson
said. ³I knew I had to stay calm and ride my best ride. I was so proud of
our horsemanship girls and the way we finished.²
During the afternoon competition, the Cowgirls were matched up against
second-seeded Georgia. The Bulldogs claimed both disciplines, 3-1, to
capture a 6-2 victory. Sophomore Rachell Shobe secured the only victory in
the reining category for OSU. The win was Shobe¹s second of the tournament.
Freshman Courtney Whitacre notched the other victory in the horsemanship
category in her first ride of the tournament.
In the English competition, OSU was in great position to advance after
sweeping Fresno State in the equitation on the flat discipline yesterday.
The Cowgirls needed only one win to seal a victory in equitation over fences
and picked up a pair of wins over the Bulldogs to move on.
In the fences category, senior Bailey Mahoney captured her second victory in
the show after earning a win yesterday in equitation on the flat. The second
victory was recorded by sophomore Ally Blais.
The English team advanced to take on Auburn in the semifinal round of the
tournament where the Cowgirls fell, 6-2. In the early part of the
competition, the Cowgirls tied Auburn 2-2 in equitation on the flat.
Senior Michelle Woolschlager and sophomore Ally Blais both captured
victories in this discipline. In equitation over fences the Cowgirls fell,
4-0, to the Tigers.
³I think we have an incredible set of girls on this team. Determination,
heart, and work ethic, I could not ask for better girls² head coach Larry
Sanchez said. ³Sometimes when things don¹t go as planned you get to see the
true heart of a person and today I was very impressed. We are looking
forward to tomorrow, these girls still have something to prove.²
In the Western bracket, the Cowgirls advanced to the third-place match
against Kansas State. The Cowgirls defeated Kansas State in the first round
of the Central Championships just two weekends ago. The match will take
place tomorrow morning at 8:30 am.
In the English bracket, the Cowgirls will face Georgia to try and capture
third place, which will also take place at 8:30 am.
