Cowgirl Equestrian Wraps Up First Day of Varsity Championship
April 18, 2008 | Cowgirl Equestrian
After receiving a bye to open both the Western and English brackets at the Varsity National Championship, the Cowgirl equestrian team began second round action on Thursday at the Texas State Fair Grounds in Waco, Texas.
After the first day of competition, the Cowgirls have showed a portion on both the Western and English sides with the conclusion of the second round set for tomorrow morning.
In the Western bracket, the third-seeded Cowgirls are paired up against sixth-seeded South Carolina after the Gamecocks defeated Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the tournament, 6-1. At the halfway point, USC holds a 3-1 lead after winning the reining discipline. OSU's lone point coming courtesy of sophomore Rachell Shobe.
The Western team will finish its contest against the Gamecocks with tomorrow's horsemanship discipline. Senior Sam Davidson, junior Jordan Pickelman, and sophomores Ashley Koch and Suzanne Randolph will all show in the competition with OSU needing at least a 3-1 margin to advance in the winner's bracket.
In the English portion of the competition, the top-seeded Cowgirls squared off with No. 8 seed Fresno State after the Bulldogs defeated New Mexico State in the morning session.
The Cowgirls swept Fresno State, 4-0, in the equitation on the flat discipline. Senior Bailey Mahoney and juniors Sam Collingsworth, Charlotte Collingsworth, and Sarah Summers all captured victories in the second round of the English bracket.
“I knew that however I rode reflected on our team positively or negatively,” Charlotte Collingsworth said. “We wanted to come out and give our fences girls a good start and we did just that. They only need to win one match tomorrow to seal a victory and I am very confident in my teammates to get it done.”
The Cowgirls will show in both English and Western in the morning to continue their pursuit of a national championship. The Western team will continue their battle against South Carolina by competing in the horsemanship category, while the English team will compete in the equitation over fences discipline against Fresno State.
The tournament will resume in the morning at 8:30 a.m.
