Cowgirl Equestrian Set for National Championships

The Cowgirl Equestrian team heads to Waco, Texas for the Varsity National Championship. The three day event will begin on April 17th and last through the 19th. The tournament will feature the top equestrian programs in the country.
The Cowgirls (8-4) last time out hey claimed the Central Championship victory declaring them the best team in the Big 12. Oklahoma State beat Baylor in the finals after winning a close show to Kansas State in the first round.
The format of this tournament will differ from other tournaments the Cowgirls have competed in this year. The brackets will be split up between Western and English categories. There has also been four girls in each discipline selected to compete in an individual competition. There will be an Western Champion, English Champion, Individual Champion for each discipline, and an Overall Champion.
The tournament bracket is a twelve seed bracket with the first four in each discipline receiving a bye to the second round. The Cowgirls have received a bye in both brackets receiving the number one overall seed in the English bracket and a three seed in the Western bracket.
In the English portion of the competition the Cowgirls will compete in the equitation on the flat on Day 1 and equitation over fences on Day 2. The Cowgirls will take on the winner of the eight seed Fresno State vs. nine seed New Mexico State match up. The Cowgirls showed against Fresno in the last week of the regular season, and came out with a victory.
On the western side of the tournament the Cowgirls were awarded the three seed. The Cowgirls will show against the winner of six seed South Carolina vs. eleven seed Stephen F. Austin. Although South Carolina is the defending national champion the Cowgirls beat them in their home arena. The Cowgirls also handled Stephen F. Austin on the road this season. The Cowgirls will compete in reining on Day 1 and horsemanship on Day 2.
The girls that have been selected for the individual competition are sophomore Ally Blais in equitation over fences, sophomore Leah Kuehn in reining, and senior Bailey Mahoney in equitation on the flat. Kuehn was awarded the two seed and will be competing against Julie Gibbs from Auburn. Blais earned the four seed and will compete against Nicole Brown from Baylor in the first round. Two seeded Mahoney will compete against Kristen Terebesi from South Carolina. The tournament bracket it s four person bracket in each discipline.
