Cowgirl Softball Falls to Iowa State, 4-1
April 13, 2008 | Cowgirl Softball
OSU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a hit. With one out, it appeared that Katelyn Bright had grounded out. However, catcher's interference was called, allowing Bright to take first. Walks issued to Alysia Hamilton and Megan Castle loaded the bases. Bright eventually scored when Kim reached on an error by shortstop Carrie Monroe.
Iowa State tied the game in the fourth on a double by Sara Stinson, scoring Sydni Jones who was hit by a pitch to reach base. The Cyclones added a run in the sixth when Amanda Bradberry led off the inning with a home run that cleared the left field wall by about 30 feet.
Oklahoma State had an opportunity to put a couple of runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Kim Kaye led off with a walk, but was thrown out at second on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Castle. Kim hit a sharp grounder to Bradberry, and the ball deflected off the second baseman and to the shortstop for the apparent force out. However, it was ruled by the umpires that Bradberry had interfered with Castle attempting to reach second, and she was awarded the base.
With two outs, Jessica Meza hit a line shot into left field, loading the bases. Kati Phillips came in to pinch hit for Breana Casaus, and on a 2-2 count, hit a line drive into right centerfield. Right-fielder Kristy Olsen made a diving catch and snowconed the ball, which would have rolled to the wall, in her glove for the third out.
The Cyclones added two more runs in the top of the seventh, one on a passed ball and the other on a groundout by Courtney Wray.
In the bottom of the inning, hits by Bright, Hamilton and Castle brought Kim to the plate as the potential winning run.
Oklahoma State (21-19 overall, 4-4 Big 12) will return to action on Wednesday, April 16, as the Cowgirls host the league-leading Texas A&M Aggies in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
