Cowgirls Mount Comeback Victory Over Wichita State, 2-1
April 11, 2008 | Cowgirl Softball
It was a pitcher's duel throughout most of the game as OSU's Anna Whiddon and WSU's Ashly Bright went head-to-head for seven innings. Bright struck out Megan Castle with two runners on in the first for Oklahoma State, ending the Cowgirls' only real threat of the game.
The Shockers had two runners on in the fourth when Whiddon issued walks to both Cynthia Verhulst and Jamie Hull. But, Bright flew out to Katelyn Bright in left field to end the inning. WSU also had two on in the sixth with back-to-back base hits through the right side by Kara L'Huillier and Britnee Barnett, but Whiddon struck out Tiffany Dahlquist and Heather Gerritse, two of her eight strikeouts, and threw out Hull to finish off the sixth.
L'Huillier led off the eighth inning with a walk and, with two outs, scored on a base hit by Gerritse, putting the Shockers up 1-0. OSU responded in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Katelyn Bright doubled into left field. Alysia Hamilton hit a chopper to shortstop which appeared to end the game. However, WSU's Barnett bobbled the ball while attempting to throw over to first and was charged with an error after allowing Hamilton to reach first.
Kaye, who had flown out in her first three at-bats, hit a ball into left centerfield and rolled to the wall, scoring Bright and pinch runner Sarah Carriger, giving the Cowgirls the win.
Oklahoma State (20-18 overall, 3-3 Big 12) has now won 20 or more games for the 32nd consecutive season. The Cowgirls will host Iowa State this weekend in a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch on both days is slated for noon.
