Cowgirls Drop Close Show to Texas A&M
The Oklahoma State equestrian team was defeated by Texas A&M 13-11 on Saturday in College Station. The Cowgirls (8-4) split with the Aggies (9-2) on the season after Oklahoma State defeated Texas A&M in Stillwater on November 10, 2007. The Cowgirls ended up 6-2 in the Big 12 with their only two losses coming to Kansas State and Texas A&M. In their fourth loss of the season the Cowgirls combined margin of loss is six points.
The Cowgirls defeated the Aggies 8-4 in the English portion of the competition to complete the sweep on the season. The Texas A&M English team has only lost in one show before today, and that was to the Cowgirls in Stillwater. For the equitation over fences discipline the Cowgirls won 4-2. Seniors Natalie Chappell and Bailey Mahoney, sophomore Ally Blais, and freshman Erin Prutow all captured victories on the day. Mahoney led the discipline with a high score of 85. Along with Mahoney, freshman Hannah Beresford and Ally Blais also put up scores in the 80's.
Associate Head Coach Suzanne Flaig said, “We faced a very worthy competitor today and we were fortunate to come out with a win. As we near the post season we couldn't be more excited with how our girls are riding. They are riding their best on the road, while minimizing their mistakes more every week.”
In the equitation on the flat category the Cowgirls picked up their second 4-2 victory of the competition. Senior Bailey Mahoney picked up her second win of the day with a 75. Sophomore Ally Blais also captured two victories in the show with a high score of 77. Along with Mahoney and Blais, juniors Charlotte Collingsworth and Sarah Summers rounded out the hunt seat side of the side of the competition. Along with Mahoney's two victories she also captured both English MVP's.
After her second victory on the day Ally Blais said, “The team is riding amazing. Everyone is showing to the best of their ability, and we are ready to compete at Nationals.”
The western team was defeated 9-3 on the day. The Oklahoma State western team was beaten in the horsemanship category 2-4. Junior Jordan Pickelman and freshman Courtney Whitacre both picked up wins on the day. Sophomore Ashley Koch picked up a team high of 77.5 in the discipline. Sophomore Rachell Shobe captured the lone victory in the reining category with a team high 74 as the Cowgirls were defeated 5-1.
Head Coach Larry Sanchez said, “I am extremely proud of the hunt team this trip, they may have secured their a national number one seed from this victory. They came in and rode like we know they are capable of riding.”
Oklahoma State will show next Saturday against Fresno State in Stillwater.
