About the Mizuno Classic
Oklahoma State will open the home portion of its 2008 schedule this weekend as the Cowgirls host the Mizuno Classic.
Due to travel issues, Texas Wesleyan will not arrive in Stillwater until Friday. Therefore, OSU will play all three round-robin games on Friday afternoon/evening.
Following the round-robin, the four teams will be seeded based on record and head-to-head competition. Two semifinal games will be played Saturday evening.
On Sunday, the losers of the two semifinal games will play at 10 a.m., followed by the winners of the two semifinal contests playing in the championship game at noon.
Oklahoma State is 10-10 entering the tournament. Stephen F. Austin is 12-10, Centenary is 8-13 while Texas Wesleyan is 4-10.
Up Next for the Cowgirls
Oklahoma State will host the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
OSU will then travel on Thursday to Clearwater, Fla., to compete in the Speedline Invitational.
The Cowgirls will face LSU, South Florida, Fordham and Purdue, as well as an opponent to be determined.
Against the Competition
Oklahoma State is 3-0 all-time vs. Centenary, including two victories earlier this season in the Century Bank Classic in Texarkana, Texas. The only other meeting between these two schools came at the 1996 UTA Tournament in which the Cowgirls won 4-3 in eight innings.
OSU is 8-0 all-time against Texas Wesleyan, although the two teams havent played in over a quarter century. The last time these two teams met on the softball diamond was during the fall of 1981 in the Cowgirl Classic.
Oklahoma State is 13-6 all-time against Stephen F. Austin, including a 2-0 mark in Stillwater. These two teams have played just three times in the last 18 seasons, twice in the 1994 UTA Intercollegiate and once in the 2001 Isuzu Intercollegiate Classic. OSU has shut out the LadyJacks on seven occasions.
Turning Two
Oklahoma State has turned nine double plays in the first 20 games of the season.
The school record for double plays turned is 19 by the 2000 Cowgirls.
OSU needs just three double plays to move into the top 10 in school history.
Hammering the Ball
As a team, Oklahoma State has already hit 22 home runs this season. That ties for the 10th-most in a single season in school history.
The Cowgirls are averaging 1.1 homers per game this year. The school record is 0.89 in 2003 when OSU hit 48 bombs in 54 games.
Senior Kim Kaye has eight home runs, tying four others for eighth in school history.
Balanced Attack
Oklahoma States offensive output has been very balanced this season. No longer does OSU have to rely on one or two players to get to the plate in run-scoring situations.
Ten different Cowgirls have hit at least one home run this season, and six players have hit at least two. Senior Kim Kaye is the only player with three or more.
Seven different players have multiple doubles this year, led by Alysia Hamilton and Katelyn Bright who each have six.
Five different Cowgirls have scored at least 10 runs and six have at least 10 RBIs in 20 games so far this season.
Cowgirls at Home
Oklahoma State has an all-time record of 288-107-3 at home, good for a .730 winning percentage.
This season, the Cowgirls have 20 games scheduled for Cowgirl Stadium. That would be the most home games since 1993 when the OSU went 19-1 in Stillwater.
This is the eighth full season since the Cowgirls moved into the stadium at the corner of Duck and McElroy. Since then, OSU is 72-46 at home.
Kaye in the Record Books
Cowgirl senior Kim Kayes name is scattered throughout the career record book at Oklahoma State.
She currently has eight home runs this season, leading the Big 12 Conference. Her 21 career home runs rank seventh in the school record books. She needs just one more homer to tie Stephanie Nicholson for sixth place and two to tie Courtney Totte and Megan Carey for fourth place.
Kaye is tied for eighth on the career doubles list with 25. Two more would move her into sole possession of fifth place.
Kayes 84 runs batted in following last weekend rank her seventh in school history. She needs four RBIs to surpass Michele Smith for sixth place.
Her 203 total bases ranks 15th all-time in school history. Three bases will move her into 13th place.
Kayes .523 career slugging percentage ranks seventh in school history.
She moved into the top-25 in school history for runs scored last week. She currently has 68, ranking 18th.
