Cowgirls Outslug No. 18 Baylor, 11-5
March 29, 2008 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma State got on the scoreboard early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. After an illegal pitch by BU starter Kirsten Shortridge moved Katelyn Bright and Hamilton into scoring position, both scored on a base hit by Megan Castle, who advanced to third on an error by the centerfielder. She then scored on a base hit by Heather Kim.
OSU took a 5-0 lead in the third when Bright doubled off reliever Jenny Isham and scored on a triple by Hamilton, her first of the season. Castle then knocked Hamilton in again, this time with a double.
Baylor narrowed the gap in the fourth inning, scoring four runs on three hits and one costly error. After Tiffany Wesley scored on a sacrifice fly after reaching third and with two runners on, it appeared that Meagan Weldon struck out. However, a ruling by the first-base umpire was declared it a check swing, and she homered over the left-field fence, cutting the score to 5-4.
Oklahoma State scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by Hamilton. The Cowgirls added two more in the fifth on a double by Breana Casaus and an infield single by Mariah Gearhart. Kaye hit her home run in the bottom of the sixth with Hamilton on for the final runs of the game.
Anna Whiddon (4-4) started for the Cowgirls and picked up the victory while Sarah Odom came on in the sixth and threw two scoreless innings. Shortridge started for the Bears and dropped to 4-4 on the season.
Oklahoma State (16-17 overall, 1-3 Big 12) will host Baylor (18-11, 1-4) in the series finale on Sunday at noon at Cowgirl Stadium.
