Cowgirls Run-Rule Utah Valley 12-0
February 24, 2008 | Cowgirl Softball
Eight different Cowgirls recorded at least one hit and seven scored at least one run. OSU scored early and often, generating three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Mariah Gearhart, who leads the team with her .480 batting average, led off the inning with a walk and later advanced to third base on a wild pitch. She scored on a base hit by Katelyn Bright. After Bright scored on an error, Castle scored on a double by Kim.
Oklahoma State mounted an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on four hits. The scoring started out much like it did in the first when, with one out, Gearhart was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She then scored on Bright's single. Both Bright and Hamilton scored on Castle's double down the left-field line, and Castle was plated when Kim hit a two-run home run over the left-field fence.
The Cowgirls added four more runs in the fourth inning to force the run-rule into effect. Sophomore Sadie Krywicki, playing in her first game of the season, led off with a solo shot over the left-centerfield wall. Two batters later, Castle hit her second extra-base hit of the game with a home run to left field. The next four batters reached base safely as Kim scored on a base hit by Jessica Meza. OSU scored another unearned run before Krywicki grounded out to end the inning as the Cowgirls batted around.
Freshman Amanda Crabtree started in the pitching circle for the Cowgirls and threw three innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five to improve her record to 5-4. Anna Whiddon came on in relief in the fourth and struck out five as well.
Oklahoma State (10-6) will return to action next weekend as the Cowgirls travel to Albuquerque, N.M. for a three-game series with New Mexico. Wednesday's home opener against North Texas has been rescheduled for April 1 at 5 p.m.
