February 11, 2008 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Coming off a third-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championships, Oklahoma State head coach Dave Smith announced the signing of prep standouts Colby Lowe (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) and Ryan Prentice (Seattle, Wash./Mount Rainier) to national letters of intent Monday. Lowe is recognized as one of the nation's elite middle distance/distance runners and Prentice is one of the top runners in the talent-rich Pacific Northwest.
“Both Colby and Ryan are All-America level talents and we are very excited to have them with us,” Smith said. “Both of these guys have the right attitude in their approach to school and to running and they are what you want in your leaders.”
Smith said Lowe will likely start his collegiate career competing in the mile run and in the 3,000 meters, but could do some of his best work in the 5,000 meters and in the 10,000 meters as his career progresses.
“Colby is a big name who is well-known nationally,” Smith said. “He's the first Foot Locker finalist to come to Oklahoma State and can be a real momentum-starter for our program. He is someone who can come in and have an immediate impact and I don't see any reason why he couldn't contribute to what could be a very special team next year.”
Prentice is a versatile runner runs similar times to what current Cowboy All-American Ryan Vail ran during his high school days. Smith said Prentice also shares a similar mindset to Vail.
“Prentice has done some really outstanding things. He was the Washington state cross country champion in 2007 and to do that in a state like Washington that has so many strong runners, you have to be really good.”
