Cowgirls Softball Splits Pair Against UAB

OSU finished the opening weekend of the 2008 season with a 3-3 record, defeating Centenary twice (10-4 and 11-4) on Friday before dropping two to Arkansas (4-3 and 3-2 in nine innings) on Saturday. The 2-0 win followed a 3-2 loss to UAB on Sunday morning in the first game of the doubleheader.
Jessica Meza, a junior college transfer from Mt. SAC College, walked to start the Cowgirls off in the fourth. With one out, Breana Casaus, also a juco transfer from Odessa College, collected a base hit through the right side. Bright hit a double into right field, scoring both Meza and Casaus.
Freshman Sarah Odom picked up the victory, her second of the season. Anna Whiddon came on in the fifth inning and pitched the final 2-2/3 innings to pick up her first save of the season.
In the morning game, OSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Heather Kim, a transfer from Syracuse, led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Kim Kaye. with two outs, Kim scored on an RBI single by freshman Alysia Hamilton.
UAB responded in the top of the sixth on a pair of home runs off starter Amanda Crabtree. Pitcher Jennifer Nelson helped her own cause, leading off the inning with a solo shot. Three batters later, Leigh Walker hit a two-run homer of her own, giving the Blazers a 3-1 lead.
OSU led off the bottom of the seventh with a pair of base hits by Hamilton and Meza. Senior Meghan Wagner advanced them both on a sac bunt, and Hamilton scored from third on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Mariah Gearhart. However, Nelson got Sam Heinlein to strike out and end the game.
Oklahoma State (3-3) will return to action next weekend as the Cowgirls travel to Tempe, Ariz., to compete in the Kajikawa Classic.
