Cowgirl Basketball Drops Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 91-45
November 23, 2008 | Cowgirl Basketball
STILLWATER, Okla. Oklahoma State's women's basketball team ran its non-conference home winning streak to 25 games on Saturday with a 91-45 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in front of 2,923 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The 19th-ranked Cowgirls (2-1) got double-doubles from a pair of players and had five players score in double figures on their way to a 55 percent shooting effort on the day. The Lady Lions (1-2) managed just a 21 percent success rate from the floor and were forced into 27 turnovers on the day.
“I thought today was definitely better than our last game. I thought the kids were a lot more focused from the start and locked in a little bit more defensively,” OSU head coach Kurt Budke said. “We did not score very well right away, but we had not shot in two days. The last two practices we shot the ball maybe five minutes. We have had a different point of emphasis and so that is on me. We used our defense to make a little offense today.”
The Cowgirls struggled in the early going before closing the first half on a 30-11 run to pull away and take a 42-20 lead into the break.
Junior Andrea Riley scored a game-high 23 points and dished out 10 assists on the way to her third career double-double. The Dallas, Texas native also grabbed seven rebounds and had a pair of steals on the day.
Senior Shaunte' Smith recorded her second double-double of the season and the 14th of her career. The Oklahoma City native scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 10 boards to move into a tie for sixth place on the school's all-time double-double list.
OSU also got solid performances from its reserves with three players coming off the bench to score in double figures.
Sophomore Kristin Hernandez paced the OSU bench with 15 points, while junior Megan Byford scored a career-high 14 points to go with seven rebounds. Freshman Kelsey Hatcher added 12 points as well.
Ciara Shields led UAPB with 11 points and was joined in double figures by Tashayla Jackson, who had 10.
