Cowgirl Softball Sweeps Carl Albert
October 03, 2008 | Cowgirl Softball
Whiddon had a perfect game through four innings when designated player Christa Johnson led off the fifth inning with a base hit up the middle. The Cowgirl hurler had nine strikeouts in facing just 16 Viking batters and picked up her second win of the fall season.
Oklahoma State had no trouble plating runs as the Cowgirls scored three runs in the first inning, added seven in the second and scored four more in the bottom of the fourth. Eight different Cowgirls had at least one hit, and Carl Albert pitchers Corry Abellanida and Andrea Pierce gave up 10 walks to OSU.
In the first game, Oklahoma State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when sophomore Mariah Gearhart led off the inning with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kati Phillips.
OSU added two runs in the third inning. With one out, catcher Sam Heinlein doubled to center field and scored on a base hit by freshman Julie Ward. She then scored on a triple by Moore, Okla., product Chelsea Garcia, one of her two triples in the game.
After Carl Albert scored a run in the top of the fourth on a couple of hits and a walk, the Cowgirls opened the game wide open with six runs in the bottom of the frame. OSU combined for six hits in the inning, including a three-run homer by Heinlein, her third of the fall season.
Oklahoma State (4-0) will return to action next Tuesday, Oct. 7, as the Cowgirls host Seminole State in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. It will be OSU's final home contests of the fall season.
