Cowgirls Earn Dramatic Overtime Win Against Kansas
October 11, 2008 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. (OSU Athletics ) Â Kasey Langdon's goal just over two minutes into overtime lifted 12th-ranked Oklahoma State to a 3-2 win over Kansas Friday night at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Langdon's goal capped a dramatic comeback for the Cowgirls, who improved to 11-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in Big 12 Conference play. OSU trailed throughout the second half until tying the score on a penalty kick with one minute remaining in the match.
“At halftime, we talked about how we weren't playing well, the wind was a factor and (Kansas) is a good team,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “We talked about this being the kind of game that teams who want to win trophies find a way to win.
“Our kids found a way to win. It wasn't our best performance, but we dug deep against a great team and got it done.”
OSU fell behind 2-1 in the 44th minute, and the Cowgirls looked like they might be headed for their first loss at home this season.
But with just 60 seconds left in the contest, Kansas was whistled for a hand ball in the box, setting up a penalty kick for the Cowgirls. And sophomore Annika Niemeier delivered, stepping up and drilling the kick past Jayhawks' goalie Julie Hanley to even the score. The goal was Niemeier's third of the season, two of which have come on penalty kicks.
“Annika was just clutch  to have the confidence and the bravery to take that penalty shot was massive,” Carmichael said.
In the overtime period, OSU took control of the attack, outshooting the Jayhawks by a 3-0 margin.
The third shot proved to be the game winner. Yolanda Odenyo sent a pass to Langdon streaking down the right side, and the Cowgirl junior delivered her second goal of the match and ninth of the season to give OSU the win.
“Going into overtime, we knew the momentum was ours, and we wanted to keep high pressing and working hard and putting them under pressure,” Carmichael said. “We were able to do that, and it paid off.”
KU took the game's first lead in the 23rd minute on an unassisted goal by Estelle Johnson, but Langdon answered just under eight minutes later on a chip-shot goal in the box set up by Kyndall Treadwell's assist.
The Jayhawks (8-5-0, 2-3-0) regained the lead just before intermission as Missy Geha's shot from 15 yards out hit the far post and bounced in.
