October 01, 2008 | Cowgirl Softball
Edmond native Sam Heinlein blasted two home runs in the first game as she went 3-for-3 with five runs batted in. She was one of five Cowgirls with multiple hits as Heather Kim, Breana Casaus, Chelsea Garcia and Kati Phillips each went 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, junior pitcher Anna Whiddon threw five scoreless innings, scattering three hits while striking out seven and walking none.
In game two, the Cowgirls scored two runs in the bottom of the second when freshman Julie Ward doubled up the middle and with two outs, scored on a double by senior Jessica Meza. Freshman Chelsea Garcia, a Moore, Okla., product, then hit a triple to right field, scoring Meza.
OSU added one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. A base hit by Garcia plated senior Heather Kim, who reached on a double in the fourth. Megan Castle led off the fifth with a triple, and scored on a triple by Ward. Garcia then scored on a triple by freshman Kelsey Anchors reaching on a single and stealing second. Anchors' triple was the fourth of the game.
Oklahoma Christian made it interesting in the top of the seventh, as Casey Brady hit a grounder up the middle to reach first, then later scored with two outs on a double by Amber Canady down the leftfield line. After Canady scored an unearned run, Cowgirl newcomer Alex Villalobos, who came on in the sixth in relief of sophomore pitcher Sarah Odom, got Kayla Jennings to fly out to end the game.
Oklahoma State returns to action on Thursday as the Cowgirls host Carl Albert State College in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at the Cowgirl Softball Complex.
