Cowgirls Down Lady Rebels in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. - Oklahoma State's women's tennis team (2-0), led by senior Iryna Tkachanko, picked up a win over Ole Miss (1-2) at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Saturday.
Tkachenko was strong at No. 1 singles, as she overcame a shaky start to beat Nika Koukhartchouk, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Cowgirl senior Yawna Allen came up short at No. 2, but Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Jo Anne Karaitiana picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectiely, to seal the win for OSU. Shatkovskaya won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, over Laura van de Stroet, and Karaitiana defeated Soledad Podlipnik, 6-4, 6-0.
The Cowgirls swept doubles play behind Allen and Shatkovskaya. The duo defeated Ole Miss' Nika Koukhartchouk and Karen Nijssen, 8-4 at No. 1. Iryna Tkachenko and Karaitiana won 8-5 at No. 2, and at No. 3, it was Belova and Maryna Tkachenko winning 8-5.
Cowgirl head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski knew that it was going to be a tough match and was very pleased to walk away with the win.
“I am very proud of the way our girls played today,” said Lubicz-Majewski. “We knew they would be tough and we explained to our girls that you can't relax against this team. Ole miss gave a lot of hustle today. Shatkovskaya and Karaitiana both played extremely well today and they helped us picked up the win.”
The Cowgirls will have a week off from competition before taking on Texas-Arlington on Sunday, Feb. 3. That match is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
