Quoting the coach
“This weekend is just to get our feet wet, knock the rust off.” Head coach Dave Smith said. “Basically get us a starting point for where we go for the rest of the season.”
A look at the schedule
The Arkansas Invitational marks the first of nine events on the indoor schedule for the Cowboys and is one of two meets in January. The Cowboys return to Fayetteville to compete in the Razorback Invitational Jan. 26. February is loaded with four meets, as OSU will be in action at the J.D. Martin Invitational in Norman, Okla., on Feb. 2 before competing in the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville on Feb. 15 and in the Sooner Invitational in Norman on Feb. 24. The Big 12 Indoor Championships are set for Feb. 29 in Lincoln, Neb. If needed, OSU will send competitors to either the Arkansas Last Chance Meet in Fayetteville or to the Alex Wilson Last Chance Meet in South Bend on March 7 to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville on March 14.
14 Strong
A total of 14 Cowboys are set to compete in a range of four events this weekend. Sean Fleming, Johnathan Stublaski, Brian Gosnell and Ryan Birkholz will compete in the mile run starting at 1:10 p.m. Peter Wood, Ryan Little, Josh Mathis and Clay Mayes will compete in the 3000 meter run at 2:15 p.m. Freshman Ryan Caldwell will be the only Cowboy to run in the 400 meter race set for 3:00 p.m., with Jerhoemee Murray, Peter Doroshuk, Paul Burke, Brad McNiff, and Bryan Downey slated to take part in the 800 meter run at 3:45 p.m. to end the day for the Cowboys.
Spotlight Show
Sophomore Sean Fleming was a strong performer for the Cowboys during the cross country season, earning all-Midwest Region honors to go with all-Big 12 recognition. He played a key role in helping OSU to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships. As Fleming enters the indoor season, coach Dave Smith is eager to see what he can do. “He was successful as our sixth man on our third place team, I think he can do some big things on the track.” head coach Dave Smith said.
Academic Honoree
First team Academic All-Big 12 honoree Peter Wood will race in the 3000 meter run, along with teammates Josh Mathis, Clay Mayes, and Ryan Little at 2:15 p.m. Friday.
Schedule of Events
With majority of the events set for the afternoon, the Arkansas Invitational gets underway with the shot put at noon and ends with the 4x400 Meter Relays at 8:45 p.m.
