Cowgirl Netters Cap Off Solid Weekend at Hurricane Invitational

TULSA, Okla. - Oklahoma State's women's tennis team, led by senior Iryna Tkachenko, capped a strong weekend at Tulsa's Hurricane Invitational with a solid showing Sunday.

In singles play, Tkachenko was most impressive on the day as she defeated Arkansas' Ela Kaluder, 7-5, 6-4, to pace the Cowgirls in the Blue Draw. Also in the Blue Draw, OSU senior Yawna Allen fell to Kansas State's Viviana Yrureta, 6-4. 6-3.

In the Gold Draw, sophomore Nataliya Shatkovskaya picked up the win over fellow Cowgirl Jo-Anne Karaitiana, 7-6. 6-1, and in the White Draw, OSU junior Bettina Gabbe defeated Kansas State's Natasha Vieira, 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play, Allen and Shatkovskaya faced off against teammates Iryna Tkachenko and Karaitina in the Red Draw with Allen and Shatkovskaya picking up the win, 8-6. In the Black Draw, it was Maryna Tkachenko and Bettina Gabbe picking up an 8-3 win over Agostina Santoro and Yuferova, who were playing unattached.

Cowgirl Head Coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said that he was pleased with the way his girls kicked off the fall schedule against solid competition.

“We feel like we played a pretty good tournament,” said Lubicz-Majewski. “Arkansas is a very strong team and we played very well up against their players. We got some positive feedback from this weekend and we feel like we have a pretty good idea of where we are at.”

The Cowgirls will be back in action in two weeks as they will travel to Waco, Texas, to compete in the Baylor Invitational.
