Cowgirl Softball Opens Fall Season This Weekend

After losing seven seniors, the Cowgirls return nine players from the 2007 season, including starters Emily Blackburn, Katelyn Bright, Sadie Krywicki, Kim Kaye and pitcher Anna Whiddon, who was 10-10 with 29 appearances and 19 starts.
Kaye, one of two seniors this year, ranks among OSU's all-time bests in several categories. The San Diego, Calif. native ranks in the top 12 in runs batted in, doubles, home runs and slugging percentage. She finished the 2007 season with a .267 batting average, 12 doubles, 21 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.
Bright (outfield), Krywicki (second base) and Blackburn (designated player) each started more than 80 percent of the games for the Cowgirls a year ago as freshmen.
New faces this year include three transfers and six freshmen. Outfielder Breana Casaus spent two seasons playing at Odessa Junior College where she set a national junior-college record with 87 stolen bases. Junior infielder Jessica Meza attended Mt. San Antonio College, and junior infielder Heather Kim transferred from Syracuse.
Among the freshmen this season will be Amanda Crabtree and Sarah Odom, two pitchers from Texas, and catcher Ashley Boyd. There are also two Oklahoma natives listed on the roster in outfielder Sarah Carriger from Claremore and infielder Alysia Hamilton from Moore. Another freshman infielder joining the squad is California native Mariah Gearhart.
The Fall Classic will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23, at Cowgirl Stadium. Three teams — Carl Albert State College, Eastern Oklahoma State College and Crowder College — join the Cowgirls in the round-robin tournament. Games will start at 9 a.m. when OSU hosts Carl Albert. The tournament will continue throughout the day with the Cowgirls playing again at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Admission is free.
