Cowboys Take Second, Cowgirls Third at Hurricane Festival
September 02, 2007 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
Oklahoma State's men's and women's cross country teams opened their respective seasons at the Hurricane Cross Country Festival today in Tulsa, Okla., where the men's B team finished second with 37 points and the women's B team finished third with 79 points.
“It's really encouraging to go out there with your B team and be that close in times with one of the top teams in the conference,” Men's Head Coach Dave Smith said. “OU ran its varsity team against our B team, but we weren't far off from winning the race. It was a good day and we got done what needed to be done.”
Junior Brian Gosnell placed third in the four-mile festival with a time of 19:48. His teammates Tucker Weems, Ryan Birkholz and Jerhoemee Murray rounded out the top ten with times of 19:53, 19:54 and 20:09.
The Cowgirls didn't compete with their main cross country runners. Instead, coach Rene Sepulveda took some of the women's track team.
“Even though it was a cross country race, we wanted to get the track team involved,” Sepulveda said. “We took a lot of sprinters, jumpers and throwers and I was really pleased because all the girls finished. We weren't really looking for a certain place finish and I was happy that they competed well for two miles.”
Redshirt freshman Irene Masai finished 14th in the two-mile run with a time of 12:37. There were four other Cowgirls finishing in the top 20, including freshmen Teran Mixon and Brittany Brewer, senior Meghan Sullivan and junior Tihana Sarac.
The Cowgirls will compete with their B team again on Sept. 7th when they travel to Wichita, Kan., for the Friends Invitational. The Cowboys won't compete again until Sept. 29th when OSU hosts the annual Cowboy Jamboree.
