Giving to OSU...and making a difference
August 28, 2007 | General
A new survey shows why people give. Conducted annually by U.S. Trust, a wealth-management company in New York, the survey states nearly 90 percent of the richest Americans say the primary reason they give to charity is that they believe in specific causes and have a desire to “give back” to society. Only one in three respondents cited income-tax deductions as a reason for their charitable giving.
Accountability and “transparency” of nonprofit groups were cited as major factors in an individual's inclination to give. Two-thirds of those with philanthropic intentions cited academic institutions and health-related groups as the organizations most likely to benefit from their giving.
At OSU Athletics, we believe each ticket holder and donor is critical to our program and making a difference. Ticket revenues represent 43% of annual revenues. Donation monies, collected through the POSSE, pay for academic services, books, tuition, fees, etc. for 400 student-athletes. OSU Athletics' total budget of approx. $40M (ranked 9th in the Big 12 Conference) is made up in large part by contributions, ticket sales from fans, alumni, and supporters primarily in sports of football and men's basketball.
The FY08 approx. revenue breakdown:
| Ticket Sales | $17,100,000 |
| Donor Seating, Club Seat, Suite, and other donations | $9,400,000 |
| Multi Media Rights | $2,600,000 |
| Big 12/NCAA Distributions | $6,700,000 |
| Concessions, miscellaneous | $4,500,000 |
| Total | $40,300,000 |
