NCAA Employment Regulations
You are allowed to be legitimately employed as long as you are paid the going rate for the position you hold and paid for work you actually perform. Please remember that you may not be paid for any value or utility you may bring to your employer because of the publicity, reputation, or fame you have obtained because of your athletics ability. 15.2.7 Employment.
Earnings from a student-athlete's on- or off-campus employment that occurs at any time is exempt and is not counted in determining a student-athlete's cost of attendance or in the institution's financial aid limitations, provided: (Revised: 10/31/02 effective 8/1/03, 4/29/04 effective 8/1/04)
- The student-athlete's compensation does not include any remuneration for value or utility that the student-athlete may have for the employer because of the publicity, reputation, fame or personal following that he or she has obtained because of athletics ability;
- The student-athlete is compensated only for work actually performed; and
- The student-athlete is compensated at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services (see Bylaw 12.4).
FEE-FOR-LESSONS:
You may receive compensation for teaching or coaching individuals as long as you do NOT use institutional facilities, you do NOT use your name or picture to advertise your ability to give lessons, and you provide the compliance office the required documentation. 12.4.2.1 Fee-for-Lesson Instruction
A student-athlete may receive compensation for teaching or coaching sport skills or techniques in his or her sport on a fee-for-lesson basis, provided:
- Institutional facilities are not used;
- Playing lessons shall not be permitted;
- The institution obtains and keeps on file documentation of the recipient of the lesson(s) and the fee for the lesson(s) provided during any time of the year; and
- The compensation is paid by the lesson recipient (or the recipient's family) and not another individual or entity.
- Instruction to each individual is comparable to the instruction that would be provided during a private lesson when the instruction involves more than one individual at a time.
- The student-athlete does not use his or her name, picture or appearance to promote or advertise the availability of fee-for-lesson sessions.
Camps and Clinics: it is permissible for you to be employed in a sports camp or clinic as long as you are paid the going rate for the services you perform. It is not permissible for you to conduct your own camp or clinic. Please remember that any camp or clinic that employs you as a camp counselor may only use your name or picture in the camp counselor section of its advertisements and may not use your name in any other manner. Remember that you may not participate in organized practice activities during institutional summer camps.
