April 08, 2007 | Cowgirl Tennis
Oklahoma State's women's tennis squad defeated Nebraska, 5-2, Sunday in Lincoln to win its fourth-straight dual. The Cowgirls are now 14-5 overall and 6-2 in the Big 12 this season.
Over their past four wins, the Cowgirls have only lost three singles matches. OSU now finishes 2007 with a 5-1 record against the Big 12 North.
Wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles gave OSU an early, 1-0, advantage. The lead disappeared after a loss at No. 1 singles and a default at the No. 2 position.
It was all O-State after that, as the Cowgirls would take the remaining four singles matches.
At No. 3 singles, Nataliya Shatkovskaya continued to roll as she downed Wiveca Swarting, 6-0, 6-2. The freshman has been outstanding lately, as she has won four-straight matches. Shatkovskaya leads the team with 14 dual victories.
Lauren Simmons is on a streak of her own as the senior has won five straight after defeating Maria Ring in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.
At No. 5 singles, Marta Tsivka inched closer to defending her Big 12 Championship at the position. The senior defeated Marianne Cicmanec, 6-4, 6-2, Sunday. She has won five straight and is now 7-1 in conference matches.
Another senior, Jennifer Poskitt, is in the running for a Big 12 Championship of her own. Poskitt downed Ashley Finnegan easily, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles Sunday and is now also 7-1 in Big 12 action.
The Cowgirls will next be in action Wednesday when they host the annual Bedlam matchup against instate-rival Oklahoma at 2 p.m at the DeBois Tennis Center.
