Cowgirls Seek Revenge in Round Two of Bedlam
April 24, 2007 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma State looks to get back on the winning track when it hosts fourth-ranked Oklahoma in the second Bedlam game of the season on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on KGFY 105.5 FM with Bill Van Ness calling the action. The Sooners won the first meeting in Norman back on April 4 by an 8-0 run rule in five innings. OU had a 6-0 lead before the Cowgirls could record an out. The two teams have headed in different directions since that game with OU only losing once and the Cowgirls only winning once. While OU is a lock for postseason, OSU is still playing to get in and cannot afford any losses. Oklahoma State is ranked 57th according to the latest RPI and a win over the seventh-rated Sooners would boost that number. Oklahoma has won the last 10 meetings dating back to the 2003 season when OSU won 4-0 in Stillwater. OSU once dominated the series, but OU has had the run of success over the last decade winning 22 of the last 23 meetings going back to the 1998 season. The Sooners have won their last five games and are 47-5 on the season and 12-3 in Big 12 play, while the Cowgirls recently snapped a seven-game losing streak against No. 15 Texas and are 25-27 and 3-10. OU has one of the most formidable offenses in the country with three players hitting over .430. Norrelle Dickson leads the conference in hitting with a .490 average, while Samantha Ricketts leads the Big 12 with 16 homers and a Big 12 record 74 RBIs.
What to Watch For
Scott is closing in on the single season Big 12 single season stolen base record of 48 held by Texas A&M's Sharonda McDonald, she has 46 for the season. Scott is five runs shy of tying the single season school record in runs scored with 56. Courtney Totte is eight RBIs shy of the career RBI record and her next home run will set the single season homer record.
Totte Ties Home Run Mark
Courtney Totte tied the single season home run mark of 13 with a three-run shot off the scoreboard in the fifth inning against Texas on April 22. Stephanie Nicholson had 13 home runs in the 2005 season. Totte hit two home runs in the series against the Longhorns, her first home run since clubbing a pair against Iowa State on April 1. Totte currently holds the single season record with 67 RBIs and her .423 batting average ranks second.
Totte, Scott Among Nation's Leaders
Seniors Courtney Totte and Shanel Scott are among the leaders nationally in RBIs and stolen bases, respectively. Totte ranks second in total RBIs with 67, and Scott leads the nation in stolen bases. The NCAA, however, ranks players on per game totals and both Totte and Scott rank fourth nationally in the respective categories.
Totte Records 200th hit
Courtney Totte continues to pile up career achievements as she became the second Cowgirl this season to record her 200th career hit. Totte's RBI single in the seventh inning against Baylor on April 15 was the magical hit. She has 63 hits this season, a career high with her previous high being 49 in 2005. Totte has not cheated herself either as 30 of her 63 hits have gone for extra bases.
Shanel Scott Steals 100th Base
Shanel Scott walked in the first inning against Baylor on April 15 and she quickly swiped second base, the 100th steal in her four-year career. Scott currently has 46 steals on the season and the next mark she achieves will be the single season Big 12 record at 48. She had a streak snapped of having a steal in 10 straight games at Texas A&M on April 18 and has stolen a base in 37 of OSU's 52 games.
Totte Named a Finalist for Player of the Year
The Amateur Softball Association, the governing body of softball in the United States, has announced the 25 finalists for the Collegiate Player of the Year. Senior Courtney Totte was one of seven Big 12 players to be named a finalist. The Lawton, Okla. native is hitting .423 with 13 home runs and a school record 67 RBIs. She has twice had six RBIs in a game this season, which ties the single game record at OSU.
