Western Half of Equestrian Squad Advances to Quarterfinals at VENC
April 20, 2007 | Cowgirl Equestrian
The western half of OSU's equestrian squad took a step closer to nabbing its fourth national championship in five seasons as they defeated Kansas State via tiebreaker to advance to the quarterfinals at the Varsity Equestrian National Championship Thursday in Waco.
The Cowgirls and the Wildcats meet three times in the regular season and twice the match up ended in a tie. It was no different on Thursday as sixth-seeded OSU and third-seeded KSU once again ended in a deadlock.
In reining, the Cowgirls picked up wins from Rachel Currat and Katie Bohr to split with the Wildcats. Rachell Shobe scored a 144.5 with her ride, the most by a Cowgirl against KSU, but lost her match up.
It was the same in horsemanship as head coach Larry Sanchez got wins from Brandi Thomas, who scored a team-high 142.5, and Jordan Pickelman to split with the Wildcats.
With OSU and KSU deadlocked at 4-4, the match would come down to the total raw scores of all the riders. O-State pulled out a 1127.5-1097 win to advance to the quarterfinals where they will face seventh-seeded South Carolina.
It was a similar story in the hunt seat bracket as the second-seeded Cowgirls faced seventh-seeded KSU. There was a different outcome however as KSU defeated OSU, 6-2. O-State got its two wins from Bailey Mahoney and Allyson Blais.
The hunter seat team will face host-school Baylor tomorrow in the consolations on the final day of competition.
