Oklahoma State Tennis Sweeps Weekly Conference Honors
April 02, 2007 | Cowgirl Tennis
Oklahoma State's tennis program became the first school of the 2007 season to have both the men's and women's Big 12 Tennis Player of the Week, as senior Lauren Simmons and freshman Oleksandr Nedovyesov were selected for the honors by the league office Monday.
On the men's side, Nedovyesov became the first player this season to win the award for a second time, as he also won the award on March 12. Currently ranked No. 57, the talented freshman started the week with a big win over Tulsa's No. 3-ranked Arnau Brugues, 7-5, 6-4. He followed that up by defeating Adrian Szatmary of Nebraska to clinch OSU's Big 12 opener. The Ukrainian also excels in doubles play where he teams with Daniel Byrnes to form the Cowboys top tandem. The pair, ranked No. 83, captured two wins this week, including a win over Tulsa's 81st-ranked team.
Nedovyesov has won seven straight singles matches, including four against ranked foes, and four consecutive doubles matches. He is currently 10-3 this season.
Simmons picks up the weekly award for the second time in her career. The senior went 3-0 this past week and 2-1 in doubles action. On the road against No. 28 Wichita State, the New York native rallied after losing the first set to force a third set. In the decisive set, she found herself down, 4-1, but forced a tiebreaker that she later win. Against Kansas State, she was down 7-3 in another third-set tiebreaker but scored seven straight points to take the match. She also picked up a win against Abilene Christian.
Simmons is 11-6 in dual competition and 4-2 in Big 12 play. She is also one win shy from moving into the top 20 in career wins at Oklahoma State.
The Cowboys will next be in action Wednesday when they host Arkansas at 2 p.m. The Cowgirls will hit the road this weekend to take on Iowa State and Nebraska.
