April 18, 2007 | General
STILLWATER, Okla.ÂOklahoma State¹s athletic department has long been known for overall success with 48 national championship banners hanging from the rafters to prove the point.
The 2006-2007 academic year offers further proof of the diversity and success of Cowboy and Cowgirl Athletics.
When the Oklahoma State men¹s tennis team reached No. 7 in the national polls on Tuesday, it became the ninth OSU program to reach the top 10 during the current academic year.
The men¹s tennis program reached an all-time best when it reached seventh this week. In the fall, women¹s soccer also achieved its highest ever ranking -- also climbing as high as seventh. Other programs that have climbed into the top 10 in 2006-2007 include men¹s cross country, women¹s cross country, wrestling, men¹s golf, women¹s golf, baseball and men¹s basketball.
Two other programs, football and women¹s basketball, did not make the top 10 but did advance to postseason play with football winning the PetroSun Independence Bowl and the women¹s basketball team returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1996.
This week, the Cowgirl equestrian team has a strong chance to record a national top-10 finish at the Varsity National Equestrian Championships in Waco.
