Cowgirls Set to Compete at Varsity Nationals
April 17, 2007 | Cowgirl Equestrian
Oklahoma State's equestrian team is set to compete at this year's Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, Texas, at the Heart O' Texas Fair Grounds. The competition starts on Wednesday and runs through Friday.
Twelve schools will represent the nation in both the Hunter Seat and Western disciplines. Last year, the Cowgirls were the Western Varsity Champions and overall reserve champions.
“As defending Varsity National Champions, we are excited about the opportunity to return to nationals to compete for another national title”, head coach Larry Sanchez said.
Oklahoma State University is seeded sixth in western and second in hunter seat. It is the hunt team's highest-ever seeding and they will receive a first-round bye. In the second round, they will compete against the winner of Kansas State and New Mexico State. The western team will be competing in the first round against eleventh-seeded Stephen F. Austin.
“We are extremely optimistic about our second-place seeding. The team has worked extremely hard all season to achieve that high seed. I feel that we are doing some of our best riding at this time,” associate head coach Suzanne Flaig said. “We are eager to have the opportunity to watch Wednesday's first round and see how the horses feel and look.”
Teams competing in the 2007 Varsity Nationals for western include, South Dakota State (12), Stephen F. Austin (11), Texas Christian University (10), Fresno State (9), Baylor University (8), South Carolina (7), Oklahoma State (6), New Mexico State (5), Auburn (4), Kansas State (3), Georgia (2) and Texas A&M (1).
The twelve schools that qualified for the Hunter Seat Teams include Southern Methodist (12), Stephen F Austin (11), New Mexico State (10), UT-Martin (9), Fresno State (8), Kansas State (7), Baylor (6), Texas A&M (5), Auburn (4), Georgia (3), Oklahoma State (2) and South Carolina (1).
Four girls will ride for the Cowgirls in each of the four division, equitation on the flat, equitation over fences, horsemanship and western. Tomorrow's events will begin at 8:30 am.
