Cowgirl Tennis Takes Bedlam Match
April 12, 2007 | Cowgirl Tennis
With a, 4-3, win over Oklahoma (7-11, 4-5) Wednesday in Stillwater, Oklahoma State's women's tennis team won the annual Bedlam match against its in-state rival for the second-straight season.
It did not look good early for the Cowgirls (15-5, 7-2), as the Sooners looked solid in doubles and took the early advantage, 1-0. OSU did manage a win at No. 2 doubles where Lauren Simmons and Iryna Tkachenko defeated Monica Purice and Christi Baxley, 8-6. The pair have now won their last five and have a Big 12-best six wins at the position in conference plays.
Extreme winds and light rain delayed the match for approximately 45 minutes after doubles play. The ladies in orange responded after the delay to take the first four singles matches to win the dual.
A pair of seniors, playing their final home match in Stillwater, got the Cowgirls going with wins. At No. 4 singles, Simmons defeated Chelsea Orr, 7-5, 6-1. The senior is putting together a solid end to her stay at OSU as she has won her last seven matches.
Senior Jennifer Poskitt put the Cowgirls up for good as she downed Elena Antakova, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6 singles. Poskitt is also putting the finishing touches on a solid career as she is now a Big 12-best 8-1 at the No. 6 position.
Yawna Allen picked up her 11th dual win of the season as she defeated Irina Lykina, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 doubles to give OSU a 3-1 advantage.
A pair of seniors got the O-State rally started so it was only fitting the Cowgirls' other senior, Marta Tsivka, clinched the Bedlam win for OSU in her final home match. Tsvika pulled out a first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), and rolled in the second set, 6-2, to defeated Anne Carter at No. 5 singles. The senior has won her last six and is a step close to defending her Big 12 Championship at No. 5 singles.
The Cowgirls will wrap up the 2007 regular season when they travel to Austin Saturday to take on Texas and College Station Sunday to face Texas A&M.
