Cowgirl Equestrian Makes Huge Comeback
April 01, 2007 | Cowgirl Equestrian
The Cowgirls made Varsity Equestrian history today in the W. Dick Freeman arena. In today's competition, the Cowgirls competed against Big 12 rival, Kansas State and the Cowgirls were fired up to have the opportunity to play Kansas State once again and defeat them on neutral ground. Their wish came true today in a match up that will be go down in the books as one of the biggest comebacks of all time in equestrian.
The morning started off very rocky for all the competitors. During warm-up and the first couple of rides, horses were refusing fences and several riders fell off their horses. The Cowgirls seemed unable to secure any wins in equitation over fences and horsemanship during the first half of the competition. At this point the Wildcats, had a 7-0 lead over the Cowgirls.
What seemed to be an impossible win for the Cowgirls, became possible when the Cowgirls won every match in equitation on the flat and reining. Every match was a nail biting experience. Each win that the Cowgirls gained, meant they were one step closer to moving to the championship bracket for Sunday's competition.
Each rider beat their opponent by an unprecedented spread that ran between 15-21 points in equitation on the flat. Scoring for the Cowgirls in equitation on the flat, were juniors Bailey Mahoney and Michelle Woolschlager, sophomore Samantha Collingsworth and freshman Ally Blais. Collingsworth received that highest score for the Cowgirls with an 81. Her score beat out the Wildcat's Whitney Snider by a huge margin of 21 points. Scoring 20 points ahead of her opponent, Casey Finnell, Woolschlager had a great pattern on Audrey. Blais remained strong after a loss in fences with a 17 point margin win over Jenny Giraldin while riding Spencer. Mahoney wrapped up the wins with a 15 point lead over the Wildcat's Bridget Doyle with a score of a 78.
With the final class of the day on hand for the Cowgirls and the championship round still at stake, the Cowgirls knew they had to pull off a clean sweep in the reining. Not only did they grab all four wins, but also the MVP award for the section. Riding Gus, senior Rachel Currat knew she had to put out a flawless performance and grab the win. Her round got the crowd roaring as she scored the highest score across the board for all four schools with a 72. Earning the remaining three points went to senior Katie Bohr, sophomore Jacque Roberts and freshman Rachell Shobe. Riding Lu, Roberts put in a great round with a high score of a 70, 70 points higher than her opponents, Dennon Zimberlon. Riding first for the Cowgirls in the section, Bohr put in a great effort on Aaron, defeating Sara Weller by 2.5 points. Shobe put in an impressive ride on Dundee, outscoring the Wildcat's Lindsey Slasbury by a significant 5 points.
The Cowgirls outscored the Wildcats by one point putting the final score at 8-7.
