Cowgirl Tennis Downs Lady Raiders to Remain Perfect
March 05, 2007 | Cowgirl Tennis
With a 5-2 win over Texas Tech (6-6, 0-2) in Stillwater on Sunday, Oklahoma States 40th-ranked women's tennis team remained perfect this season.
The Cowgirls are now 6-0 this season and 2-0 in the Big 12. The 6-0 start is the best for the women's tennis program under head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski, who is in his 18th season leading the squad. OSU also remains the only undefeated team left in the Big 12
The Cowgirls lost at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to surrender an early, 1-0, advantage to TTU. The lone bright spot in doubles for OSU came at the No. 2 spot where Lauren Simmons and Iryna Tkachenko found themselves down 0-2 to Anne Fankam and Maria Andres but would score eight unanswered points to win the match, 8-2.
O-State did not stay down long as they won five of six singles matches to take the victory. Senior Marta Tsivka got the Cowgirls going early with her outstanding play as she quickly downed Kerryn Potgieter, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.
Another senior, Simmons, kept the momentum going for the Cowgirls when she defeated Fankam in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 4 position. It was Simmons third-straight singles victory.
Freshman Nataliya Shatkovskaya pushed the dual score to 3-2 as she beat Janet Durham, 6-3, 7-6 (2), at No. 3 singles to remain perfect this season (5-0).
The lone setback for OSU came at No. 1 singles where Iryna Tkachenko not only battled the talented Samantha van der Drift but a muscle injury. The junior fought tough but lost, 6-4, 6-4. It was the first loss of the season for Tkachenko.
The victory was clinched by junior Yawna Allen in an outstanding match at No. 2 singles. Last season, Allen was defeated by Oklahoma native Lakann Wagley in three sets in the last match of the regular season. The loss gave the Lady Raiders a, 4-3, win over OSU and kept the Cowgirls from a fourth-place finish in the Big 12. On Sunday, the two meet again, this time at No. 2 singles. Allen got revenge on Sunday as she beat Wagley, 6-1, 7-6(4), in the match of the day to clinch to win for OSU.
Senior Jennifer Poskitt put the icing on the cake as she defeated Andres, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, at No. 6 singles to win her third straight this season.
Oklahoma State's undefeated Cowgirl tennis team will next take the court when they welcome No. 14 Baylor to Stillwater on Saturday at noon.
