Cowgirls Fall to No. 8 Northwestern, 7-2
March 04, 2007 | Cowgirl Softball
The Wildcats were the sixth 2006 Women's College World Series team that OSU has faced this season. NU finished as the national runner-up last season.
OSU dipped below the .500 mark at 11-12, while Northwestern improved to 15-5 on the season.
Northwestern quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in its first opportunity at the plate. Garland Copper and Kelly Dyer both hit two-run singles in the inning. Cooper finished the day with three hits and three RBIs, while Dyer had two hits and four RBIs.
The Cowgirls cut the lead in half with two runs in the third inning. Courtney Totte drew a bases loaded walk and Kim Kaye brought home a run on a sacrifice fly, but that was all the offense OSU could muster.
Eileen Canney replaced NU starter Lauren Delaney and allowed just two hits over the final 4.2 innings. Canney recorded five strikeouts and earned the win to move to 7-5 on the year.
Jessica Hoppock earned the start for OSU, but she could not make it out of the second inning as she allowed four runs on three hits and walked four. Anna Whiddon came on in relief and allowed just one earned run. Hoppock was credited with the loss and fell to 9-7 on the season.
Northwestern plated a run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth inning to go ahead 7-2. Dyer had the big blow connecting on a two-run home run in an inning that was kept alive by a Cowgirl error.
