Aggies Defeat Cowgirls

The Oklahoma State equestrian team was defeated by the Texas A&M Aggies 14-12 today at the animal science arena. The day was not a total loss however as the Cowgirls did pick up two of the four MVP awards.
The Cowgirls beat out the Aggies in equitation over fences 4-3. Earning points for the Cowgirls were Ally Blais, Devon Smithburg, Paige Hortman and Caitlyn Roberts. Blais, a freshman from Boyton Beach, Flor., beat out sophomore Ali Mueller by seven points. Smithburg, a transfer from LSU, beat out her oppoenent, Vivianna Cordero, by a whooping 23 points. Smithburg also was awarded the MVP award for her ride. Hortman, a senior, also won her match against A&M by a large margin. Hortman beat out junior Erin Ivy by 20 points. The final point for the Cowgirls in equitation over fences was awarded to the final rider, Caitlyn Roberts. Roberts beat out freshman Lindsay Smith by 8 points.
Going into the equitation on the flat the Cowgirls were up by one. In this section of the competition, the Cowgirls remained on top of the Aggies. The Cowgirls out scored the Aggies by one yet again. Earning the points for the Cowgirls were Charlotte Collingsworth, Bailey Mahoney, Blais and Sarah Summers. Collingsworth took out Ashlie Soderstrom by seven points giving the Cowgirls the first point in the section. Junior Mahoney, also the captain of the English team, beat out Tegan Zealy by six points. Earning yet another point for the Cowgirls was freshman Blais. Blais not only put two points on the board, but was awarded the MVP award for the section. She outscored her opponent by three points. Summers, making her debut for the season, beat out Ali Mueller by five points.
The Cowgirls were out scored in the horsemanship section of the competition by the Aggies, 3-2. Also during this section, the Cowgirls tied the Aggies in two of their patterns. Earning the two points for OSU in horsemanship were senior Brandi Thomas and sophomore Jordan Pickelman. Thomas, a western team captain, beat out A&M's Christine Sceets by 3.5 points. On her fourth appearance for this season Pickelman was unstoppable. Her perfect 4-0 record showed through yet again in the arena. She beat out A&M's Sibyl Parson on her pattern.
The biggest upset to the Cowgirls came in the reining section of the competition against Texas A&M. OSU earned two points while A&M earned five. Putting two points on the board for the Cowgirls were Jacque Roberts and Molly Morrison. Roberts, a sophomore, is having a perfect spring semester with a 4-0 record with an overall 8-1-1 record. Roberts ride beat out Sassie Broaddus by two points. Morrison, a freshman, earned her first collegiate win today against A&M's Genna Fishgold. She out scored her opponent by one point.
The Cowgirls return to action with a home competition against Fresno State University on March 16. They are scheduled to begin the day at 2:00 pm.
