Cowgirls to Compete in Inaugural Big 12 Invitational
March 29, 2007 | Cowgirl Equestrian
This Friday Oklahoma State's equestrian team will be loading a bus heading south to College Station, Texas, to compete in the inaugural Big 12 Classic. The teams competing against the Cowgirls this weekend will include Texas A&M, Baylor and Kansas State. Riders from each university will compete in the four events.
The Big 12 Classic is the precursor to what will be the Big 12 Championship. In order for it to be considered a championship, there must be a total of six schools within the conference that have varsity equestrian teams. Also making this competition unique is that both disciplines (Hunter and Western) scores are combined to form one champion team.
“I am looking forward to the Big 12 Classic. Each of these schools have talented riders and having them all under one roof will make for a very competitive weekend,” head coach Larry Sanchez said. “Combining both the Western and English scores for an overall champion is very exciting for us, as both disciplines have progressed throughout the season.”
Riding for the Cowgirls this weekend in equitation over fences will include seniors Paige Hortman and Caitlyn Roberts, sophomore Jaclyn Osterstock and freshman Ally Blais. Equitation on the flat will include junior co-captain Bailey Mahoney, sophomores Samantha Collingsworth and Michelle Woolschlager, and freshman Ally Blais
Representing the Cowgirls in the Reining section will be seniors Katie Bohr and Rachel Currat, sophomore Jacque Roberts and freshman Rachell Shobe. The Horsemanship section will include senior co-captain Brandi Thomas, junior Samantha Davidson, sophomore Jordan Pickelman and freshman Ashley Koch.
The Cowgirls will compete head to head against Kansas State on Saturday with the winner either facing Texas A&M or Baylor Sunday morning.
