Cowgirls Falter against Kansas, 4-3
March 24, 2007 | Cowgirl Softball
Kansas was down to its final out when the Jayhawks got back-to-back home runs from Dougie McCaulley and Nicole Washburn to tie the game, and Sara Ramirez homered in the ninth inning to lead Kansas (22-9-1, 1-0 Big 12) to a, 4-3, nine inning victory over Oklahoma State (20-18, 0-1 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at Cowgirl Stadium.
KU starter Kassie Humphreys (12-3) handcuffed the Cowgirl offense through the first four innings as she held on to a one run lead. The Cowgirls finally broke through in the fifth inning as pinch hitter Sam Heinlein tied the game with an RBI single. Courtney Totte then drew a bases loaded walk to give OSU the lead heading into the final two. The RBI tied Totte with Jamie Foutch for OSU's single season record in RBIs with 51.
Krystle Sanchez added an insurance run in the sixth inning on her seventh home run of the season, but the top of the order came through for the Jayhawks in the seventh inning.
OSU starter Anna Whiddon (8-5) retired the first two
The Cowgirls loaded the bases in the eighth inning with two outs. Humphreys sent a pitch to the backstop; the Jayhwaks caught a break as the ball bounced right to catcher Tiffany Craner who flipped to Humphreys to get Totte trying to score the winning run.
The very next batter to step to the plate for Kansas took advantage of the second life as Ramirez sent one over the fence for her third home run of the season, which gave KU a 4-3 lead.
The Cowgirls went down quietly in the bottom half of the inning as Shanel Scott struck out looking to end the game. Humphreys finished with 12 strikeouts for KU, while Whiddon struck out a career high 10 Jayhawks.
