Cowgirl Netters Fall for First Time this Season
March 10, 2007 | Cowgirl Tennis
Oklahoma State's 43rd-ranked women's tennis team suffered its first setback of the 2007 season when they were defeated by No. 25 Baylor, 6-1, at the DeBois Tennis Center in Stillwater on Saturday.
“We knew we were going to have a tough match today,” head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “They had two players back in their lineup who have been out. Our girls fought hard, however.”
The Bears (8-6, 3-1) put the Cowgirls (6-1, 2-1) in a hole early as they swept the doubles point.
In singles play, one of the few bright spots for OSU was the play of Marta Tsivka at No. 5 singles. Tsivka dropped the first set to Zuzana Chmelarova, 6-2. The senior and reining Big 12 Champion at No. 5 singles fought back to take the second set, 6-4. In the third set, Tsivka fought off three Chmelarova match points to take the decisive third set, 11-9.
Tsivka also scored the only point for the Cowgirls when they fell to Baylor, 6-1, last season.
Lubicz-Majewski also got a solid performance from Yawna Allen at No. 2 singles. Even though she lost to Zuzana Cerna, the 52nd-ranked player in the country, the junior battled hard but could not overcome the talented Cerna.
The Cowgirls will have a chance to bounce back quickly as they will travel to Boulder, Colo., to face No. 30 Colorado on Monday at noon.
