Young Cowboys Shine on Day Two of Conference Meet
February 25, 2007 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
Watts, a sophomore, captured a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:08.38 to lead all Cowboys. Junior Alejandro Ruiz finished 15th in the event with a time of 8:22.89. Senior Brian Ehlis was the third OSU runner to finish in the top 20, finishing 19th with a time of 8:28.27.
Also in the 3,000-meter run, sophomore Matt Barnes-Smtih finished 21st, freshman Sean Fleming finished 23rd, senior Michael Breshears finished 28th and senior Ryan Ripley finished 34th. Two Cowboy freshmen, Clay Mayes and Jerhoemee Murray finished 43rd and 45th, respectively, and sophomore Marshall Summa finished 47th.
Murray, a freshman from Hillsboro, Ore., finished fifth in the finals of the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:26.83. Murray advanced to the finals after he finished fifth in Friday's prelims.
In the one-mile run finals, Cowboy sophomore Peter Doroshuk finished eighth with a time of 4:21.80. Doroshuk advanced to the finals with his performance in Friday's prelims in which he broke his old personal record by 12 seconds in the event.
“Watts finishing second in the 3,000 (meter run) was huge,” said Cowboy assistant track coach Dave Smith. “Murray and Doroshuk each ran extremely well this weekend, also. That is huge because all those guys are young and will be back next year. Our young guys came and showed they can run very well at a big meet like this.”
The meet concludes the Pokes' indoor season. The Cowboys will kick off the outdoor season at the Tulsa Duels on Saturday, March 24.
