Cowgirls Lose to Top-ranked Tennessee, 8-0

Top-ranked Tennessee used a five-run fifth inning to run-rule Oklahoma State, 8-0, on Saturday afternoon in the Palm Springs Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.

Alexia Clay hit a walk-off double down the right field line to plate two runs in the bottom of the fifth, to cap the five-run inning.

UT remained perfect on the season and improved to 15-0 on the year, while OSU evened its record at 7-7.

Tennessee jumped out to an early lead courtesy of a three-run home run by Tonya Callahan in the bottom of the first.

OSU starter Jessica Hoppock settled down after the home run to retire 11 of the next 13 hitters she faced. She could not escape the fifth though, as the Lady Vols loaded the bases and took advantage with a pair of run scoring hits from Tiffany Huff and Callahan. Clay then ended the game with her double off of reliever Chelsey Barclay.

It proved to be more than enough as Megan Rhodes shut down the Cowgirl offense. Rhodes yielded a leadoff single to Shanel Scott to start the game, but she was quickly gunned down trying to swipe second. OSU only had two base runners the rest of the game.

Hoppock was credited with all eight runs and she struck out six in a losing effort to fall to 7-4 on the season. Rhodes allowed just the one hit and struck out nine to improve to 4-0.

OSU plays second-ranked Arizona State in the nightcap at 10:30 p.m. (CST).
