Cowboys Head to Ames for Big 12 Championships
February 22, 2007 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
The Cowboys have had a solid indoor season, including strong performances from the youth of the roster. Freshman Sean Fleming has been sensational in his first year. Freshmen Marshall Summa and Daniel Watts have always run very well.
The Pokes will be led by senior Joseph Gray and junior Ryan Vail. At last year's meet, Gray finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:15.54 and Vail was part of the distance medley relay team that finished second.
OSU will be without two of its top runners, however. Senior David Pomies and junior David Jankowski will sit out due to injuries. Pomies was a part of the second-place DMR team at last year's conference meet while Jankowski finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run.
Despite that fact, Cowboy assistant track coach Dave Smith says he is confident that his team will be ready to compete this weekend.
“We've got nine or 10 guys with a good chance of scoring at the conference meet,” said Cowboy assistant track coach Dave Smith. “Last year we scored 20 points at this meet and that is what we are going for this year.
“Unfortunately, we are going to have to do so without (David) Pomies or (David) Jankowski, who were two of our big scorers last year.”
The two-day meet will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Iowa State's Lied Recreation Athletic Facility.
