Cowgirls Down Sycamores to Stay Unbeaten
February 17, 2007 | Cowgirl Tennis
Oklahoma State's 41st-ranked women's tennis squad downed No. 75 Indiana State (5-2), 5-2, on Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa to stay unbeaten this season.
“The girls played hard today,” head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “You have to give Indiana State credit. They gave us all we could handle.”
Oklahoma State took the early advantage in the dual by sweeping the doubles matches. The match at No. 1 doubles featured two undefeated teams as the Cowgirl tandem of Yawna Allen and Natalia Shatkovskaya faced ISU's top team, Jennifer Migan and Joanne Shickerling. It was all Allen and Skatkovskaya as the pair won, 8-4.
The Cowgirls started singles play with a quick win by Marta Tsivka at No. 6 singles as the junior stayed unbeaten (2-0) by defeating Kelly Hamm in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5.
At No. 5 singles, Poskitt got her first win of the season as the senior beat ISU's Fadzai Masiyazi, 6-4, 6-3.
Tkachenko clinched the match for O-State at No. 1 singles. The junior continued her hot start to the 2007 as she defeated I.Messchelein, 7-6 (4), 6-1, to win her third match in as many tries.
“I think you could really see the lack of court time we have had because of the weather,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “It was a good win but now we have to get ready to take on Kansas.”
The Cowgirls will next be in action when they open their Big 12 season against Kansas Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. in Stillwater.
