Cowboys, Cowgirls Earn All-Midwest Region Honors
November 14, 2007 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
The Oklahoma State men's cross country team placed six of its runners on the all-Midwest Region squad, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today. With six all-region runners, the Cowboys had the second-highest total in the country, trailing only Georgetown, who had seven.
Matt Barnes-Smith, David Chirchir, Sean Fleming, David Jankowski, Ryan Vail, and Daniel Watts all secured the honors as the Cowboys won their third straight Midwest Regional last weekend.
Chirchir, who was named all-Big 12 and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year following the conference meet, was the top Cowboy finisher at last week's regional, coming in seventh with a time of 30:11. Fellow all-Big 12 runners Ryan Vail (eighth, 30:11) and David Jankowski (ninth, 30:12) also had strong showings on their way to earning all-region honors.
After missing out on all-conference honors, Daniel Watts stormed back with an 11th place finish in 30:16, while all-Big 12 runners Matt Barnes-Smith (12th, 30:21) and Sean Fleming (19th, 30:39) added another postseason honor to their standout season.
“It's great for the program and it's good that those guys were recognized,” said head coach Dave Smith. “The most important thing is that the team does well, but when you have six guys that get all-region you're going to do pretty well.”
Representing the Cowgirl cross country squad on the all-region team was freshman Mihaela Susa, who capped off her first season in Stillwater by earning all-Midwest Region recognition.
The Cowboys are back in action next Monday when they travel to Terre Haute, Ind. for the NCAA Championships.
