November 10, 2007 | Cowgirl Equestrian
Oklahoma State's equestrian team remained undefeated after defeating Texas A&M on Saturday in Stillwater.
After beating defending national champion South Carolina two weekends ago, the Cowgirls (4-0) dealt the Aggies (5-1) their first loss of the season, knocking off A&M 16-9.
“The girls stepped up,” said OSU head coach Larry Sanchez. “They did exactly what we wanted them to do and earned the victory.”
Both teams played great, and captured victories. The English team won by a decision of 8-5, while the Western team cruised to an 8-4 victory.
Through the first two events, the Cowgirls held a 7-6 lead. In equitation over fences, OSU won the head-to-head matches, 4-3. The Cowgirls won the last three of the category to lift the team to a victory. Senior Bailey Mahoney captured the MVP with a score of 80. Freshman Hannah Beresford also captured victory with a team high score of 81. Along with Mahoney and Beresford, juniors Devon Smithburg and Jaclyn Osterstock both captured victories, both girls scoring in the mid-70s. The riders who compete in equitation over fences stay on their winning streak after today's show.
For the western team the Cowgirls tied 3-3 in the horsemanship category. Sophomore Ashley Koch led the team with a 76 on her way to a victory and the MVP. Along with Koch, junior Suzanne Randolph and freshman Margaux Tucker also captured victories against the Aggies. Through the fourth show of the season, Randolph keeps her undefeated streak alive with a convincing victory today.
The other half of the English team, equitation on the flat, captured a 4-2 victory over the Aggies. Bailey Mahoney won her second MVP of the day in this event, while winning her third and fourth on the year. Mahoney and junior Sam Collingsworth both added 73.5 scores to the victory. Senior Michelle Woolschlager and junior Sarah Summers also added victories for the Cowgirls.
To finish out the day in reining, the Cowgirls won by a score of 5-1 giving the Western team the victory. With a score of 73, sophomore Molly Tipton wins her match while capturing the MVP for the discipline. Along with Topton, senior Rachel Currat, sophomores Leah Kuehn and Rachell Shobe, and freshman Brianne Parnell all added victories for the Cowgirls. Tipton's MVP gives three different Cowgirls MVPs for this category on the season.
The Cowgirls return to action when they travel to Texas next weekend to take on Stephen F. Austin on Saturday and Baylor on Sunday.
