October 28, 2007 | Cowgirl Equestrian
Oklahoma State's equestrian team kept its undefeated record in tact after beating defending national champion South Carolina, 16-3, on Saturday in Stillwater.
After the first hour of competition the Cowgirls (3-0) led 8-2 over the Gamecocks (1-2) as they benefited from spectacular riding on both the English and Western sides.
“Today's victory feels good,” said head coach Larry Sanchez. “They beat us last year at nationals. They are a good team and I am glad to see what the girls are capable of today. We are on track to achieving our goals for this season.”
In the Cowgirl victory, they managed to capture three of the event's four MVP awards. Obtaining the honors were seniors Sam Davidson and Bailey Mahoney, and sophomore Leah Kuehn. On the day, the Cowgirls had 13 scores of 70 or better, topped off by an 81 by Mahoney in equitation on the flat.
For the English portion of the show, the Cowgirls won the equitation over fences, 4-1, and swept the equitation on the flat, 5-0. Senior Bailey Mahoney, junior Devon Smithburg, and sophomores Jaclyn Osterstock and Ally Blais all contributed wins for OSU in equitation over fences.
Along with the MVP-winning Mahoney, senior Michelle Woolschlager and juniors Charlotte Collingsworth, Sam Collingsworth, and Sarah Summers all added wins to the Cowgirl sweep in equitation on the flat.
The Western team was equally impressive, winning the horsemanship category, 4-1. Along with MVP Sam Davidson, senior LeeAnna McNally, junior Jordan Pickelman, and sophomore Suzanne Randolph all captured victories for the Cowgirls. Mahoney earned her second MVP for the season.
Junior Jacque Roberts and sophomore Molly Topton won their matches along with MVP winner Leah Kuehn to capture a victory in reining.
The Cowgirls will return to action on November 10 when they host Texas A&M in their final home meet of the semester.
