Cowgirls Knock Off No. 8 Texas
October 27, 2007 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. Â For the third time this season, Oklahoma State defeated an opponent ranked in the Top 10 as the 25th-ranked Cowgirls earned a 1-0 win over No. 8 Texas Friday night at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Sophomore Siera Strawser's goal in the 70th minute lifted OSU to the win as the Cowgirls improved to 11-4-2 overall and 4-3-1 in Big 12 Conference play. Coach Colin Carmichael's squad has now beaten Texas, Missouri and Notre Dame this season when each of those teams was ranked in the Top 10.
“We have a knack for winning on the big occasions ÂÂ now we just have to figure out how to do that for normal games,” Carmichael said. “We've shown we can play with and beat anybody. We're 3-1 against the Top 10 this year, and the game we lost against Texas A&M was very close.
“(Against Texas), our team fought hard and did what we asked, and we got a positive result and a huge win.”
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, Texas was the aggressor offensively early in the second half, at one point taking four shots within a 59 second span.
But the OSU defense came up big time and again, with OSU goalkeeper Erin Stigler racking up seven saves and recording her fifth shutout of the season. The shutout also marked the 13th of Stigler's career, leaving her one shy of tying the school record.
The Cowgirls' efforts would be rewarded at the 69:41 mark as Yolanda Odenyo sent a pass to Strawser, who drilled it past UT goalie Dianna Pfenninger for the match's only score. The goal was Strawser's fourth of the season, while Odenyo recorded her second assist of the year.
“Siera always seems to score for us in big games,” Carmichael said. “She has goals against Notre Dame, Missouri and Texas. Her goal tonight was big time.”
Texas, which fell to 11-3-3 overall and 4-2-2 in the league, outshot the Cowgirls 21-12 in the match, including an 11-4 advantage after intermission.
OSU returns to action Sunday when they host Colorado at 1 p.m.
