Coaches Corner
Men's coach Dave Smith and women's coach Rene Sepulveda are looking forward to the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock this Friday. Smith hopes to overcome the Big 12 favorite and take the title.
“Colorado is the favorite to win, they have three returning All-Americans and they're tough. But we've got a pretty good team too,” Coach Smith said. “If we're healthy and give everything we can, we will do well. Our goal at the beginning of the season was to win the Big 12 and that is still our goal.
“I think Ryan Vail has a chance to win an individual title. He did very well at the Cowboy Jamboree and rested during Pre-Nationals. His main competition will be the All-Americans from Colorado but I think he has progressed so rapidly that he has caught up to their talent level.”
Rene Sepulveda is hoping to compete for a top spot with his young team.
“This will be the first Big 12 meet for four of our top runners. It will be nice to have the experience of Tone Hjalmarsen, Eva Tomankova, Maria Trejo and Anissa Angelosante,” Coach Sepulvada said.
“Our team is right in the middle of the conference so if we run well, we'll be in the top four or five.
“I think our goal for this weekend is to match or better our fourth place finish from last year.”
