OSU Track to Compete in Norman on Saturday
January 30, 2007 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
The Cowboys will be competing in their third meet of the season, but head track coach Dick Weis says that they are still in training mode heading into Saturday.
“Our guys are still training, and we are making sure that they stay in that mode until next weekend,” Weis said. “Next week, we will send some guys to Washington and some guys will go to Arkansas. That is the big weekend.”
Although it is early in the season, the youth of the Cowboy roster has shown some good signs in the first couple meets. Redshirt freshman Marshall Summa has run very well, setting a personal record in the 800-meter run at the Arkansas Invitational and then smashing that record the next week at the Razorback Invitational.
Also, freshman Sean Fleming has recorded two top-10 finishes in his first two meets. Fleming finished first in the one-mile run with a time of 4:13.94 at the Arkansas Invitational. The next weekend, he finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.95.
“Our young guys are still in training, but they are getting better and better every week,” said Weis. “They are still about one year away from seriously contributing, but they are solid and have been running very well.”
The J.D. Martin Invitational will be hosted at OU's John Jacobs Track Facility and is set to begin Friday. The Cowboys will not begin action until 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
