Cowboys Capture Third-Place Finish at Jamboree
September 30, 2006 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
Oklahoma State's men's cross country team finished third at the 70th Annual Cowboy Jamboree on Saturday behind a solid performance from redshirt sophomore Ryan Vail.
Vail, a Gresham, Ore. native finished fourth in the event with a time of 24:24 to lead the way for the Pokes. His strong performance in the 8k race came despite muggy conditions at the Oklahoma State Cross Country Course.
“I think Vail's performance today really showed how fit he is,” said Cowboy head coach Dave Smith. “The key for him will be staying healthy and if he does that, he could be a top-20 finisher at the NCAA Championships.”
Cowboy senior Joseph Gray finished 13th in the race with a final time of 25:04. Redshirt sophomore Alejandro Ruiz and redshirt junior Brian Ehlis each finished with a time of 25:36. Ruiz came in 20th place while Ehlis finished 21st. Ryan Ripley, a senior from Ocala, Fla., finished 22nd while a pair of redshirt freshmen, Peter Doroshuk and Daniel Watts, finished 24th and 29th, respectively.
“Our guys did exactly what we asked them to do today,” said Smith. “I was impressed with Ripley and Doroshuk and I feel like Ruiz and Ehlis are very solid.”
The University of Arkansas garnered first-place honors, led by senior Peter Kosgei's third-place finish. Abilene Christian finished second in front of the Pokes. Colorado School of Mines and Tulsa rounded out the top five.
“I feel like we are where we want to be right now,” said Smith. “Joe (Gray) is getting healthy and (David) Jankowski will be prepared to run at the Pre-National meet in two weeks.”
The Pokes will have an open week before competing at the Pre-National meet in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday, October 14.
