Wieligman Completes Softball Staff with Hiring of Clarisa Crowell
September 26, 2006 | Cowgirl Softball
“Clarisa is a great organizer,” Wieligman said. “She understands the fundamentals of softball and will be a great asset to our pitchers. She is a good recruiter and will be able to relate to kids from the east coast.”
Crowell only spent one year at Syracuse where her primary focus was the Orange pitching staff. She was also instrumental in recruiting and scouting.
The Orange had a team ERA of 2.74 under Crowell in 2006. SU went 36-21 last season and was eliminated in the first round of the Big East Tournament.
Crowell served as an assistant at Ohio University for two years from 2004 to 2005 before heading to Syracuse. At Ohio she was responsible for the Bobcat pitching staff, and she coached the infield and helped instruct hitters in addition to her role as the pitching coach.
As a player, Crowell was an all-conference performer three three years at Virginia Tech. She earned All-Atlantic 10 accolades as a freshman for her work as a pitcher and third baseman, and she was also named the team's “Most Valuable Player.”
Crowell again was named first team All-Atlantic 10 as a sophomore, but this time as an outfielder. She was named the Hokies' MVP for the second straight season. As a senior, Crowell was named second team All-Big East and was voted Tech's best offensive player.
Crowell is among the Hokies' career leaders in several pitching and hitting categories. She holds the career mark with a .722 winning percentage, and she ranks second in career earned run average (1.36), strikeouts (362), wins (65), starts (87), innings pitched (614), appearances (106), complete games (62) and shutouts (26). She finished her career with 200 hits, 293 total bases and 104 runs scored.
Crowell has worked clinics and camps at both Virginia Tech and the University of Maryland. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Virginia Tech in 2002, and she received her master's degree in recreation and sports sciences from Ohio in 2005.
